Archiving Multi-Script Signage in the Mekong Delta: A Linguistic Landscape Analysis and Speculative Design Framework for Shared Script Morphology

Abstract

The Mekong Delta is a vibrant multicultural crossroads where Romanised Vietnamese, Traditional Chinese, Cham, and Khmer scripts appear side-by-side on public signage, reflecting centuries of migration, trade, and cultural layering. This collaborative project documents and analyses these multi-script linguistic landscapes to understand how diverse writing systems coexist spatially and symbolically. Through systematic field archiving, visual and morphological analysis, and stakeholder interviews, we map patterns of script visibility, dominance, and interaction. The research culminates in a speculative design intervention: a modular, morphology-based layout system that enables equitable visual coexistence of all four scripts without privileging any single orthography. By treating script forms as interdependent design variables rather than competing elements, the proposed framework offers a practical, culturally sensitive model for digital archiving, urban signage policy, and heritage preservation. Expected outcomes include an open-access digital archive, peer-reviewed publications, and a prototype layout toolkit that can be adapted to other multilingual regions. The project thus bridges linguistic anthropology, graphic design, and digital humanities to safeguard the Delta’s polygraphic heritage while proposing innovative solutions for multicultural representation in public space.
